Choosing a caterer in the Madison area
Anyone who prepares and sells meals to the public in Wisconsin needs a food license, and in Madison and Dane County every food establishment must be licensed and inspected each year by Public Health Madison & Dane County. You can read a caterer's inspection reports with the health department's online lookup; it doesn't grade them, and it suggests focusing on the types of violations rather than the count.
Ask for a written quote that spells out the per-person price, staffing, rentals (tables, linens, dishes), setup and cleanup, service charges and gratuity. A service charge isn't always a tip, so ask how it's used.
Book early for spring and fall weekends, ask for a tasting for larger events, and confirm how they handle allergies and dietary needs, and how late you can change your guest count.
