In a Wisconsin winter your furnace is not optional, so build a relationship with a contractor before something breaks. An annual tune-up in early fall is the cheapest insurance against a January no-heat call.

When replacing equipment, ask for a load calculation rather than a same-size swap. Many older homes have oversized furnaces, and right-sizing improves comfort and efficiency. Get quotes for comparable equipment so you're comparing like with like.

Ask about Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide efficiency program, which offers discounts on qualifying furnaces and heat pumps, usually applied by participating contractors. A good contractor will know what currently qualifies and whether your utility takes part.

Confirm the installer is licensed and insured, and ask how labor and parts warranties are handled.
