Choosing a financial advisor in the Madison area
"Financial advisor" isn't a protected title, so ask exactly what credentials someone holds and how they're registered. You can look up advisors and firms on FINRA's BrokerCheck and the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure site.
Ask how they're paid: a flat fee, an hourly rate, a percentage of assets, or commissions on products they sell. Then ask whether they act as a fiduciary, legally required to put your interests first, for all of the advice they give you.
