Choosing a hair salon in the Madison area
In Wisconsin, cosmetologists are licensed through the state Cosmetology Examining Board, and the salon itself needs its own establishment license. Both certificates have to be posted in a conspicuous place in the salon, and you can check any license with the state's License Lookup at license.wi.gov.
Booking color, highlights or extensions? Ask for a consultation first. A good stylist will ask about your hair's history (past color, relaxers, keratin treatments) and give you a price range before starting, since long or thick hair often costs more.
Prices for the same service vary widely between a quick-cut chain and an independent studio. Ask whether the quote includes toner and styling, what the cancellation policy is, and how the salon handles a fix if you're unhappy with the result.
