Things to do

Where to stay in Madison, WI: hotels by area, from the Capitol Square to Middleton

Where you stay in Madison mostly comes down to two things: whether you want to walk everywhere (stay downtown or near campus, and pay for parking) or drive in (stay on the east or west side, where parking is free). Details below come from each hotel's own website and from the City of Madison, the airport, Monona Terrace and UW–Madison, checked in November 2026. Parking fees and policies change, so confirm when you book.

Quick tips

  • Book early for big weekends. Badgers home football games, UW commencement in May and December, and big conventions fill the city. The Wisconsin Union Hotel on campus requires a two-night minimum on football and graduation weekends, and its 2027 commencement weekend is already sold out.
  • Budget for parking downtown. Downtown hotels charge for parking, from about $20 a night for self-parking to $40 or more for valet. Hotels on the east and west sides and in the suburbs park free.
  • Taxes: Madison adds a 10% room tax to the 5.5% sales tax, so expect about 15.5% on top of the room rate in the city.
  • From the airport: Dane County Regional Airport (MSN) is on the north side. Metro's Route D2 runs from Door 6 to downtown and campus, taxis wait at Door 7, and many hotels run courtesy vans (call from the phone between baggage claims 1 and 2). See our getting around guide.
