Badgers game day in Madison: Camp Randall, the Kohl Center, parking and bag rules

On a home football Saturday, Camp Randall Stadium fills with about 76,000 people and the near west side turns red. Basketball and hockey keep the Kohl Center busy all winter. Here's what you need to know before you go, all checked against UW Athletics, UW Transportation Services and the City of Madison.

Checked against official sources · Updated November 1, 2026

Where the Badgers play

  • Camp Randall Stadium, 1440 Monroe St. at Monroe and Regent: football, since 1917. Capacity is listed at 76,030.
  • Kohl Center, 601 W. Dayton St.: men's and women's basketball and men's hockey.
  • UW Field House, 1450 Monroe St., right next to Camp Randall: volleyball and wrestling.
  • LaBahn Arena, 105 E. Campus Mall: women's hockey.

Still to come this season: football hosts Rutgers on Saturday, Nov. 7 (3:15 p.m.) and Minnesota for Paul Bunyan's Axe on Friday night, Nov. 27 (6:30 p.m.). Men's basketball opens at the Kohl Center on Nov. 2, women's hockey has home series at LaBahn through November, and volleyball's last regular-season home match is Nov. 17. Full schedules for every sport are on uwbadgers.com.

Tickets

  • Buy single-game tickets through the UW Athletic Ticket Office's online system on uwbadgers.com. UW Athletics also links to SeatGeek for buying and reselling.
  • Tickets are mobile. Open and transfer them in the Badgers app. At the Kohl Center, add your ticket to Apple or Google Wallet before you arrive; screenshots and paper barcodes aren't accepted.
  • Students buy season tickets in summer and get one mobile voucher per game, which must also be in Apple or Google Wallet.
  • Ticket office: 1440 Monroe St., 608-262-1440 or 1-800-GOBADGERS, tickets@uwbadgers.com. It doesn't take cash.

Bags and what to leave at home

Camp Randall has a clear bag policy. You can bring a clear tote up to 12" x 6" x 12", a one-gallon clear plastic storage bag, or a small clutch up to 6.5" x 4.5". Clear backpacks, tinted and mesh bags aren't allowed. Medical bags, diaper bags (with a child) and seat cushions up to 16" wide get inspected and let in. There's no bag check, so anything turned away at the gate gets thrown out.

Also banned at Camp Randall: outside food and drink, strollers, umbrellas, flags, banners and signs, noisemakers, laser pointers, inflatables, laptops, video cameras, tripods and weapons.

The Kohl Center allows bags up to 8.5" x 11" and clear totes up to 12" x 6" x 12", but no backpacks, and no outside food, strollers or selfie sticks. Every fan at both venues goes through a metal detector, so leave time at the gate.

Getting there and parking

Driving to Camp Randall is the hard way. Monroe Street near the stadium closes to traffic from six hours before kickoff until an hour after the game, and nearby streets fill fast.

  • UW lots: game-day parking in UW lots is first come, first served from the attendant, card only. Prices vary by lot, from $5 (Lots 60 and 76) to $20 (Lots 46 and 67). Cars parked in reserved game-day lots without a permit are towed.
  • Bucky Shuttle: UW Athletics runs shuttles to the stadium from Lots 60, 64 and 76. Passes are sold online in advance, not at the lot.
  • Bike: there's a free, staffed bike corral for football on the Southwest Path behind the UW Credit Union on Monroe Street. Bring your own lock, and pick your bike up within an hour after the game. BCycle also has stations around campus.
  • Bus: Metro detours several routes around Camp Randall on home football days. Check Metro's detour page before you ride, and see our getting around guide for fares and how to pay.
  • Kohl Center: the city's State Street Campus Garage charges a $15 event rate before Badgers basketball and hockey games, and UW lots nearby sell game-day parking from $5 to $20 depending on the sport. Meters on Dayton and Frances streets can be bagged up to seven hours before an event.

Tailgating

Tailgating on UW lots is allowed only for regular-season football games, by people with a game-day parking permit and their guests. Lots close at 1 a.m. after the game, and overnight parking isn't allowed.

  • Grills are fine on surface-lot pavement, but not in drive lanes or fire lanes, and no propane or electric grills in parking ramps. Open flames and wood fires are banned. Douse used charcoal in a metal bucket and take it with you.
  • Tents must be weighted down, aren't allowed on ramp roofs, and come down when you leave them.
  • Generators are allowed, but you can't refuel on site. Only use the stalls you paid for. Lot 34 is alcohol-free.

Traditions

  • Jump Around: between the third and fourth quarters, the whole stadium jumps to "Jump Around," a tradition since 1998. Fans also stand and sway arm in arm for "Varsity."
  • The Fifth Quarter: after every home game, win or lose, the UW Marching Band puts on a post-game show on the field, and many fans stay up to 45 minutes to watch.
  • Bucky Badger: the badger has been UW's mascot since 1889. His full name, Buckingham U. Badger, came from a 1949 contest.
  • Badger Bash: UW Athletics' free pre-game party at Union South, across from the stadium, with the band and Bucky.
