For anything beyond a small repair, ask for a written estimate that separates labor, parts and any permit fees. Remodels and water heater replacements often need a permit from your city; a good plumber will pull it for you.
Winter is the season to plan for. Know where your main water shutoff is, keep pipes on outside walls warm during cold snaps, and ask whether a plumber offers after-hours service before you need it at 2 a.m.
Ask about warranties on both the work and the equipment, and whether the quote assumes standard or premium fixtures.
