Choosing a painter in Madison
Get at least two written quotes, and make sure each one spells out the same things: which rooms or surfaces, how many coats, who supplies the paint (and which product line), and how much prep is included. Scraping, patching and caulking are where cheap quotes cut corners.

Madison's exterior painting season is short. Many exterior paints need about 50°F or warmer (some newer formulas are rated lower), so good exterior painters book up by spring. If you want the outside done this year, call early.
Much of the housing near the isthmus was built before 1978 and may have lead paint. In Wisconsin, paid renovation or painting work that disturbs more than a small area of paint in those homes must be done by a firm certified for lead-safe renovation by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Ask for their certification.
Before you hire, ask for proof of liability insurance, a written warranty on labor, and two or three recent local references you can actually call.
