Choosing a nail salon in Madison
Manicurists in Wisconsin are licensed through the Cosmetology Examining Board, and the salon needs an establishment license. Both have to be posted where customers can see them, and you can check them at license.wi.gov.

Wisconsin's sanitation rules are worth knowing. Emery boards, buffer blocks, sanding bands and disposable nail bits must be thrown away after each use, reusable manicure tools must be disinfected before each use, and pumice stones and credo razors (the blades used to shave calluses) aren't allowed. Clean towels are required for every client. If a salon reuses files or pulls tools straight from a drawer, go elsewhere.
For gel, dip or acrylic nails, ask how long a set usually lasts before a fill and whether removal is included in the price.
