Things to do in Mount Horeb, WI: the Trollway, the Driftless Historium and more
Mount Horeb sits in the Driftless Area about 30 minutes west of Madison, and calls itself the "Troll Capital of the World." Its Main Street, the Trollway, is lined with hand-carved trolls, local shops and cafes, and the Military Ridge State Trail runs right through town. Checked with the Mount Horeb Area Chamber, the village, Dane County Parks and the DNR in November 2026.

The Trollway and downtown
More than 40 hand-made troll sculptures line Main Street. The first were carved in the mid-1980s by local woodcarver Michael Feeney, at the village's request, after the highway bypass worried downtown businesses. Pick up a printable troll map or the digital troll guide from the chamber, then walk the Trollway past locally owned shops, cafes and galleries.
- Driftless Historium, 100 S. Second St.: the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society's local history museum, open Friday through Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($10 adults; free for kids 4 and under, members and veterans).
- Brix Cider, 119 S. Second St.: cider from 100% Wisconsin-grown apples and a farm-to-table kitchen, open Wednesday to Sunday.
- Grumpy Troll Brew Pub, 105 S. Second St.: a brewpub just off Main Street.
Outdoors
- Military Ridge State Trail: the 40-mile rail-trail between Fitchburg and Dodgeville; the Mount Horeb trail depot at 116 S. Second St. has parking and restrooms. Bikers need a state trail pass.
