Keeping your tree fresh

Tips from the Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association: - Water is everything. A fresh tree drinks a lot in its first week, so check the stand every day and keep the water above the bottom of the trunk. Use a stand that holds about a quart of water per inch of trunk diameter. - Recut the trunk if it was cut more than 12 hours ago, and don't shave the sides to fit the stand; the outer wood takes up the most water. - Plain water only. Skip sugar, aspirin, bleach and other additives. - Keep it away from heat: fireplaces, heaters, vents and sunny windows. If needles break or drop when you touch them, the tree is dry and should come down. A well-watered tree usually stays fresh three to four weeks.

After the holidays

  • City of Madison: the Streets Division picks up trees at the curb in January. Last season there were two rounds, starting in early and late January. Remove the stand, lights and every ornament, don't bag the tree, and set it on the terrace at least 4 feet from poles and hydrants. Wreaths and garlands go in the trash, because their wire damages the chippers. Trees can also go to the drop-off sites at 402 South Point Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave. Collected trees become mulch.
  • Suburbs and villages set their own pickup rules, so check your town's site. See our trash and recycling guide.
