Ask whether the quote covers removing and disposing of old flooring, subfloor prep, moving furniture, trim and transitions. Get the square footage and the overage (extra material for cuts and waste) in writing.

Older Madison homes often have hardwood under carpet that can be refinished for less than new flooring. In basements, ask about moisture testing before installing anything; vinyl plank and tile handle damp spaces better than wood.
In homes built before 1978, sanding or tearing out old flooring can disturb lead paint or other old materials, so ask how the installer handles that. Under Wisconsin's home improvement rules, if you're asked to pay anything before the work is finished, the agreement has to be in writing.
