Choosing a child care provider in Madison

In Wisconsin, anyone paid to care for 4 or more children under age 7 for less than 24 hours a day needs a license from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Licensed family child care, usually in the provider's home, covers 4 to 12 children; licensed group centers care for 13 or more. Smaller providers caring for 1 to 3 children can be certified through the county instead.

Before you tour, look the program up in Wisconsin Child Care Finder (childcarefinder.wisconsin.gov). It shows the license, the date of the last inspection and any history of violations for the past three years. Licensed programs also have to post their visit reports near the license, where parents can see them. Many programs carry a YoungStar quality rating from 2 to 5 stars.

On a visit, watch how staff talk to the children, ask about staff turnover, sick-child and closing policies, and what a typical day looks like. Waitlists for infants can be long in Madison, so get on several early. If you may qualify for help with costs, ask whether the program accepts Wisconsin Shares, the state's child care subsidy.
