Poker is extremely popular in Madison Wisconsin, and a number of professional poker players have called Madison home, poker games are played all over the town, and now electronically at Ho Chunk Madison casino (formerly Dejope). There are also a few popular pub leagues and charity tournaments around town as well.
I used to play poker frequently at a few home games and was a regular at Ho Chunk in Wisconsin Dells but don’t play as much anymore so I’m a bit out of touch with the local poker scene but I will try to list the games and tournaments I know of around the city of Madison WI. The casino is in a huge fight with a state and I’m not sure how long the electronic tables will be allowed there, but I think we’ve seen proof that there are plenty of people in the area who enjoy playing the game.
Poker Tournaments In Madison WI
The casino is offering tournaments now, so poker fans wanting to play texas holdem tournaments will have a choice in addition to local bars, bowling alleys, and home games. The Badger Poker league offers freeroll tournaments at rotating locations, with real cash prizes in a bar league type format. Various charity tournaments are offered throughout the year, and a few tournaments are played at local VFW posts.
I’ll update this page soon with more poker tournaments in Madison WI.
Cash Games In Madison Wisconsin
Cash games in Madison are played underground in private homes, usually invite only and for friendly stakes. A few serious games exist, but I am not aware of them anymore as I haven’t been playing poker. If you don’t mind electronic tables, real money poker games are offered at the Ho Chunk Casino in Madison, mostly $1 and $2 no limit texas holdem and and low limit fixed limit poker games, I hope they start offering other game formats too but I’m told if enough people request a game it will be spread.
Professional Poker Players From Madison
Many professional poker players have called Madison home, including the most famous poker player of all time Phil Hellmuth who started his career while a student at the University Of Wisconsin, Madison. Mark Kroon, otherwise known as P0kerH0 is a professional online poker tournament player – who also owns a bar “Players” on Atwood Ave. High stakes online poker player Phil Galfond also lived here recently, along with numerous other online poker millionaires (some of which are portrayed in documentaries about the rise and fall of the online poker boom).
